Activist who accused Haryana SP of sex abuse shoots self dead

JIND: The Haryana Police on Sunday claimed that Jind-based social activist Sunil Kapoor has shot himself dead after he was surrounded by the police. Kapoor was accused of being involved in levelling sexual harassment allegations against former superintendent of police, Jind, Sumit Kumar. A letter had gone viral in which several women police personnel accused Kumar of sexual exploitation. Following this, a case under the IT Act and other sections was registered against Kapoor.In the sexual harassment case, the Haryana govt gave a clean chit to SP Sumit Kumar, but the Women’s Commission was not satisfied with the probe and demanded further investigation. However, the govt gave a clean chit to the SP and closed the matter.The Jind police alleged that Sunil Kapoor, who earlier allegedly opened fire at the Jind CIA team, committed suicide. The Jind SP claimed that during a cordon laid in the presence of Uttarakhand Police, Kapoor took the extreme step. Manish Kumar, in charge, CIA staff, Jind, informed that after receiving the accused’s location in Dehradun, a joint team of Haryana, Haridwar, and Dehradun police raided his hideout. The accused was hiding at his relative’s house and locked the room from the inside. When the police, with the help of relatives, managed to get the door opened, the accused panicked and shot himself.Confirming the incident, Jind SP Kuldeep Singh said the Uttarakhand Police were carrying out proceedings.
