CREDIT/ Action Against Hunger Mogadishu (HOL) — Action Against Hunger has launched a major project to help smallholder farmers in Baidoa improve food production, strengthen water systems, and reduce reliance on emergency aid in one of Somalia’s most drought-prone regions. The Resilient and Efficient Agroecological Value Chains and Technologies (REACT) project, funded by the Italian Agency for International Development (AICS), will run through 2027 in partnership with Genius Water, Zamzam University, and the Rural Education and Agriculture Development Organization (READO). The initiative follows renewed concerns over food insecurity following below-average Gu’ and Deyr rains, with poor crop performance and rising malnutrition rates. Baidoa, a displacement and agricultural hub in Somalia’s Southwest State, remains among the hardest hit, hosting thousands of families uprooted by drought and conflict.Under REACT, partners will rehabilitate water infrastructure, promote soil and water conservation, and establish farmer field schools to enhance skills and productivity. The project will also train and equip women and youth to engage in small-scale agribusiness, while strengthening farmer groups to connect with buyers and access microfinance. “We are not investing in a temporary fix,” said Rehema Bashir, Project Lead at Action Against Hunger. “REACT is a transition tool embedding water systems, agroecological skills, and market access within local structures so that farmers in Baidoa can withstand shocks and progress with dignity.” A cornerstone of the project is its localization model, which ensures Somali institutions and communities co-design and co-implement interventions. Organizers say this approach will enable sustainability beyond the project’s duration.
