Zamfara State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, in collaboration with Health Standard Concern Organisation (HESCO), have distributed 9,000 tree seedling to 30 schools, aim to enhance climate resilience, improve livelihoods in the state. Speaking today during the tree plant campaign, the HESCO program Manager Murtala Iliyasu reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to work with the ACreSAL Project and other partners to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among young people and communities across Zamfara. “We have successfully carried out a Tree Seedling Distribution and Plantation Campaign across 30 selected schools in Gusau, Bungudu, and Kaura Namoda Local Government Areas of Zamfara State”. He mentioned According to him, the four-day campaign, which took place from 3rd to 6th November 2025,was aimed at greening the school environment, combating desertification, and strengthening environmental education among pupils and students. “The exercise covered 30 schools across the two catchment areas of the three ACreSAL LGAs ,10 schools per LGA, comprises selected primary, junior, and senior secondary schools to ensure broad community reach and participation”. He explained He further revealed that during the campaign, a total of 9,000 assorted tree seedlings were distributed and planted across the 30 selected schools. “The seedlings comprised Neem (Azadirachta indica), Eucalyptus, Mahogany (Khaya senegalensis), Malena, and Zaitun (Olive tree). These species were chosen for their adaptability to local climatic conditions and their environmental benefits such as providing shade, improving air quality, and preventing erosion”. He said He said all the selected schools already they have functional Students Forest Conservation Clubs (SFCCs) established earlier by HESCO and ACreSAL. “These clubs are responsible for nurturing and maintaining the trees planted within their school premises,” he stated. It was gathered that the activity,was supported by the World Bank–assisted ACreSAL Project, aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance climate resilience, promote sustainable land management, and improve livelihoods in semi-arid regions.
