‘Accusations By Extremists’: MA Teachers Union Defends Educators Celebrating Kirk Assassination

The largest teachers union in Massachusetts is demanding that school districts back off from disciplining educators who publicly cheered the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA), which represents more than 117,000 members, issued a statement Tuesday blasting administrators for suspending teachers who posted celebratory comments online after Kirk was gunned down last week. Union leaders argued that punishing those teachers “validates accusations by extremists.”

“The Massachusetts Teachers Association is calling on local school districts and public colleges and universities to be partners with unions in the fight to defend educators from bullying and harassment and to protect their rights,” MTA President Max Page and Vice President Deb McCarthy said in their joint statement. “We are insisting that public school administrators or officials not take actions that validate accusations by extremists against educators.”

“The ongoing campaign by extreme-right conservatives to discredit and defund public education has grotesquely exploited the shooting death of Charlie Kirk to launch attacks against people commenting on this public figure’s beliefs and statements,” they added. The MTA did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

At least four Massachusetts school districts — including Peabody, Framingham, Sharon, and Wachusett Regional — have taken disciplinary actions against teachers for posts appearing to celebrate Kirk’s assassination, according to the Boston Herald.

“Just a reminder, we’re NOT offering sympathy,” a teacher at Wachusett Regional High School allegedly wrote online after Charlie Kirk was shot.

Another teacher at Framingham allegedly posted a video of herself singing “God Bless America” as a TV broadcast reported on Kirk’s assassination

“We became aware of a social media post late last night and took immediate action,” the superintendent at Framingham Public Schools said, according to Boston.com. “As a District, we are committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for everyone. We do not condone violence or hateful behavior in any form.”

Kirk, a husband and father of two young children, was fatally shot in the neck while speaking to a crowd of students at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. Utah County prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder and are seeking the death penalty.
