A dangerous driver with no driving licence was chased by the police and only stopped when he was challenged with a Taser. Christopher Voase was spotted on the A55 but drove away, going the wrong way around a roundabout and hitting a police car.
The 41-year-old admitted a dangerous driving charge, driving with no licence and no insurance. A judge at Mold Crown Court today jailed him for 12 months for the dangerous driving offence.
Prosecutor Joseph Lees said a police officer was alerted to a driver suspected of having no licence nor insurance on the A55 on August 26. He spotted the Volkswagen car travelling towards Queensferry and followed it to the A494. You can sign up for all the latest court stories here
He indicated for it to stop but it continued to Plough Lane. The driver – Voase – went the wrong way around a roundabout and narrowly avoided an oncoming bus.
He then tried to go around a driver who was turning right into Deeside community hospital, the court heard. Voase drove down a narrow country road but drove into the front of the police car, reversed and went onto the A494 then Clwyd Street.
Eventually he stopped his car and got out. He raised his right fist, said Mr Lees.
The pursuing police officer also got out of his patrol car and drew his Taser. Voase was arrested.
When interviewed by police he said he had been “stupid” and it had been dangerous driving. He admitted he had never held a driving licence nor insurance.
Euros Jones, defending, said if Voase had simply stopped as requested he would have simply been fined. But he panicked.
He said a “lack of consequential thinking was evident throughout this case”. He said the defendant, of Green Meadows, New Broughton, Wrexham, denied ramming the police car but accepted his car had damaged it.
He said Voase said he had put up his hand to show that his house keys were on his key ring and he “wanted these brought with me”. Mr Jones also said Voase’s partner has said their relationship would be over if he ever gets into a car again.
This is a “huge motivation” for him as the relationship is very important to him. The judge Her Honour Nicola Jones told the defendant he had ignored the rules of the road and disregarded the risks.
She also read that he had lost a child soon after their birth. But she said she had to impose a sentence of immediate custody as he had breached a court order twice before.
There was no separate penalty for driving with no insurance but his licence was endorsed with six penalty points and for driving other than in accordance with a licence there were three penalty points.
He was disqualified from driving for two years and must take an extended test. You can sign up for all the latest court stories here
