A/R: Four in Critical Condition After Gas Explosion in Adum
Kumasi, Ashanti Region Four individuals are in critical condition following a gas explosion that rocked the Adum area in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital. The blast occurred in the early hours of the morning at a commercial building along one of the busy streets in the central business district.
Emergency services promptly responded to distress calls. Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and paramedics arrived on the scene to extinguish flames, evacuate trapped persons, and convey the injured to nearby hospitals.
Eyewitnesses say the explosion’s force shattered windows and sent shockwaves through neighboring structures. Some of the critically injured included shop attendants and bystanders who were closer to the point of ignition.
Although the exact cause is under investigation, preliminary reports suggest a malfunction or leakage from a gas cylinder may have triggered the blast. Authorities have cordoned off the area for safety and to facilitate investigation procedures.
Officials from the GNFS have expressed concern over fire safety compliance in commercial zones, citing challenges such as tightly packed structures and limited access routes for firefighting equipment.
The injured are receiving treatment at designated hospitals in Kumasi, and police are working to identify the source of the gas leak and determine culpability. More details are expected once investigations are concluded.
