A/R: Bompata residents reject mining activities

Residents of Bompata, a farming community in the Asante Akim District of the Ashanti Region, have declared a firm opposition to any form of mining operation in their community. According to them, their decision to reject any form of mining within their enclave is backed by the national concerns over the devastating effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, in other parts of the country. “Our position is based on the serious environmental, social, and health consequences that mining has caused in other parts of the country. We will not allow mining in our community,” Spokesperson for the residents, Joseph Baah, said at a press conference on Tuesday, November 4, in the community. “Our specific concern includes, but is not limited to, the destruction of farm lands, vegetation, and forest resources, which threatens our livelihood," he added. He argued that they are determined to protect its environment and livelihoods from destruction. The residents, therefore, called on the government and relevant authorities to respect the community’s decision and ensure that no mining permits are granted for operations in the area.
