Eline Van der Velden, CEO of AI-focused production company Particle 6, created the AI character Tilly Norwood, describing her as a “piece of art” and a creative tool, not a replacement for human actors.
Van der Velden stated that AI, like animation or CGI, offers new possibilities for storytelling without diminishing live acting, and that AI characters should be judged on their own merits.
Despite the creator’s assurances, Hollywood talent agents have reportedly shown interest in signing Tilly Norwood, leading to significant backlash from human actors.
Actors including Melissa Barrera, Mara Wilson, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez have criticised the development, with some suggesting boycotts of agencies that work with AI talent.
The controversy surrounding AI characters like Tilly Norwood reflects broader concerns within the entertainment industry, similar to those raised during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike regarding AI’s impact on actors’ livelihoods and intellectual property.
