Managing Rangers – Aasgaard dilemma, Curtis and Chermiti conundrums and decision on free agent French star

Russell Martin bagged his first Rangers victory in the Scottish Premiership with a dramatic late win at Livingston. The has helped ease some of the pressure on the under-fire boss despite fans still chanting for the Ibrox boss to go. But three points at least allows him to breathe a little bit more easily as he prepares to fly out to Austria later this week for their second Europa League group game against Sturm Graz. The victory is a start for Martin and he will be hoping it’s the catalyst to a much-needed winning run, with Falkirk up next in the league on Sunday before the domestic action takes a break for the World Cup qualifiers. However, he’s far from out of the woods yet and there is plenty for him to ponder on that flight out from Glasgow on Wednesday. Here, Record Sport looks at some of the issues that could been the manager’s mind. If only the ex Luton Town man could play with Erling Haaland every week that might help get the best out of him after his stunning four-goal haul while on international duty with Norway during the last World Cup qualifying break. But how does Martin get the best out of the 23-year-old without the services of the Manchester City superstar? For £3.5million, Aasgaard hasn’t yet made the kind of impact the Light Blues would have been hoping for. He suffered that early set-back with an injury in pre-season but he has made nine appearances – seven in the starting XI – and has yet to score or provide an assist. In fact, arguably his best game was in stifling Callum McGregor during the Old Firm derby stalemate. But it’s in attacking sense Rangers fans want to see the best of him and Martin needs to find a way to get the best out of him. He appears to be playing deep in the No. 10 role and should be getting closer to the attackers to influence the came at the top end of the pitch. The summer recruitment has been criticised with some players, including the aforementioned Aasgaard , not hitting the ground running. Could that force the Ibrox side to delve into the free agent market? The Light Blues, along with rivals Celtic, have reportedly been offered the chance to sign French midfielder Pierre Ekwah. It comes just months after he made a £5million move from Sunderland to St Etienne this summer after the Ligue 2 side triggered a loan-to-buy clause in his contract But the 23-year-old was unhappy after they dropped into the French second tier despite his strong showings and reports in France say he has now officially ripped up his contract with immediate effect. He was on the books at English Premier League sides Chelsea and West Ham United as a youngster and could prove a useful acquisition given his versatility with the central midfielder also able to play in the heart of defence. The player’s lawyer believes that means he can sign for anyone as a free agent and it’s claimed he’s held talks with English clubs already. And according to Inside Futbol (via Mark Hendry ), Celtic and Rangers are among those who have been alerted to his services. Youssef Chermiti started the Europa League defeat against Genk but Russell Martin cited a lack of game time as a reason for him dropping back to the bench for the trip to Livingston. One thing is for sure – an £8million man can’t be stuck on the bench long term and the transfer fee, whether he likes it or not, is going to weigh heavily on the ex Everton man’s shoulders. But the Portuguese youngster hasn’t showed up in the opportunities he has been given and the same can be said of Bojan Miovski who missed a glorious chance to open the scoring in West Lothian. Cyriel Dessers was much-maligned and divided opinion among the light blue legions but nobody can argue with his 51 goals over two seasons at the Ibrox and they must be replaced. Which of the two will pick up the mantle, or could they even play together in a two-pronged attack? Findlay Curtis was the bright hope early on with the teenager bursting onto the scene with his goal in the Champions League first leg qualifying win against Panathinaikos at Ibrox. But the youngster hasn’t started since the return leg in Athens and has been reduced to cameo roles off the bench for the Light Blues. He found the net from the bench against Alloa Athletic in the Premier Sports Cup and a vital equaliser at St Mirren in the Premiership. But he is being overlooked with Mikey Moore seeing plenty of action after arriving amid huge fanfare on loan from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and that will be frustrating one of their own academy graduates. When a manager is struggling for success then the last thing he needs are unhappy players in the dressing room. But Clinton Nsiala – remember him? – popped up to remind everyone he is still at the club and available. The forgotten Frenchman hasn’t featured this season with the club happy to let him go on loan during the summer transfer window. Ex AC Milan man Nsiala showed some promise under Philippe Clement but had been training with the Under-19s during the some with Dynamo Kyiv keen and clubs in Belgium. But the player reportedly didn’t fancy the move to the Ukrainian club as a positive career step. And Nsiala took to Instagram to send a message to Martin as he posted a video of him going to training with the caption “STILL HERE.” He also shared another post that read, “progress isn’t a straight line,” along with a picture featuring the words “play hard” and “remember who you want to be.”
