Most teams had last week off, but while they were on break, Dudley’s key conference win over Page created the biggest swing in this week’s rankings.
1. Grimsley (5-0, 2-0)
Last week: Win over Western Guilford, 66-6
Last week’s rank: 1
This Week: Varina (VA)
Western Guilford gave up a combined 47 points over its previous four games, but Grimsley had put 59 on them by halftime. In two conference games, Grimsley outscored Southwest Guilford and Western by a combined 131-6.
2. East Forsyth (3-2, 0-0)
Last week: Bye
Last week’s rank: 2
This week: West Forsyth
After letting the Mooresville game slip away, the bye week was good timing as the Eagles hope to correct problems relating to penalties and special teams ahead of its matchup with its big conference rival.
3. Northern Guilford (4-1, 0-0)
Last week: Bye
Last week’s rank: 3
This week: Asheboro
Northern has committed 12 turnovers this season, but half of them occurred in the Week 2 game against East Forsyth. The Nighthawks have had two turnovers in each of the last two games, the most since then.
4. Reagan (4-1, 0-0)
Last week: Bye
Last week’s rank: 4
This week: Northwest Guilford
The passing game is only at a 41.7% completion rate, but the ground game has gone for 992 yards, fourth in the Central Piedmont 7A/8A Conference, and 10 touchdowns. John Evans’ league-leading 868 yards and eight touchdowns represent the vast majority of the ground game.
5. West Forsyth (3-2, 0-0)
Last week: Bye
Last week’s rank: 6
This week: East Forsyth
The Titans are the CPC’s leading rushing attack at 1,174 yards. They’ve scored 18 of their 22 touchdowns via the rush and in games other than the one against Grimsley have averaged 8.8 yards per carry, despite last year’s leading rusher CJ Blevins transferring to Western Guilford.
6. Reidsville (4-2, 2-0)
Last week: Win over Carver, 44-8
Last week’s rank: 7
This week: Rockingham County
The 35-0 loss to Reagan still doesn’t make sense. In the rest of its games, the Rams have averaged 41.6 points, with 44 in consecutive weeks knocking off previously unbeaten teams. Carver had only allowed six points in five games prior to Reidsville, but the Rams were up 30-8 at halftime in an eventual running-clock win over the Yellowjackets.
7. Dudley (3-3, 2-0)
Last week: Win over Page, 21-17
Last week’s rank: 8
This week: Smith
The Panthers didn’t score on three of their six red zone chances, with two lost fumbles, but hung on to win against Page, with two critical run stops and two forced incomplete passes on a game-sealing goal line stand after Page reached their nine-yard-line late.
8. Page (3-2, 0-1)
Last week: Loss to Dudley, 21-17
Last week’s rank: 5
This week: Ragsdale
At the end of the first half against Dudley, wide receiver Kasai Poindexter had three clutch receptions for 23 yards during a tying touchdown drive, but the junior didn’t have any catches at all in the second half as the Panthers held the Pirates to just three points over the final two quarters. Page had averaged 40 points in its three games since losing 30-9 to Charlotte Christian in the opener. Page was ranked fifth last week.
9. Northeast Guilford (4-1, 0-0)
Last week: Bye
Last week’s rank: 9
This week: Southern Guilford
With the school’s stadium rebuild, the Rams will have to play the rest of its schedule, all conference games, on the road.
10. High Point Christian (5-0, 0-0)
Last week: Win over Fayetteville Trinity Christian, 44-8
Last week’s rank: 10
This week: SouthLake Christian
The Cougars trailed 8-7 after the first quarter but outscored Trinity Christian 37-0 after that, signaling that HPCA could be the favorite to win a state title for the first time since winning back-to-back in 2015 and 2016.
