Palma’s Parc de la Música, to be located in the Can Palou Park, will be the future home of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra’s new HQ, referred as the Caja de Música (literally Music Box), now has town hall approval, last week’s council meeting having voted in favour of the project.
The Parc de la Música will be at the rear of the Can Palou Park, which is currently under construction. It will host outdoor cultural and musical activities, and plans include the creation of an amphitheatre for up to 1,000 people. There will be a 360-degree surround sound system and a giant screen – 16 metres by ten metres – for the Caja de Música.
There is to also be a children’s recreational area. A car park is due to be developed, and features will include a number of fountains.
The development is on municipal land and forms part of the broader Palma Culture & Innovation Bay project in the city’s Nou Llevant area in the vicinity of the GESA building.
A new home for the orchestra has been spoken about for years. It finally now seems to be about to become a reality, the cost put at 7.9 million euros.
