Sheer seconds before his name was announced to the 100,000+ crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday afternoon, Snoop and the sound technicians discovered his mic wasn’t working as he stood in the players tunnel ready to emerge.
Surprisingly, the 53-year-old remained unbothered throughout the ordeal, nonchalantly telling the sound guys that his mic had no sound. The crew, however, were not as chill, desperately scrambling to get another microphone before showtime.
Fans later expressed their anxiety after having watching the moment online after the game.
“How can they be soooo unprepared and unprofessional,” one social media user wondered, while another commented, “You had one job.”
One site even titled the video, “Moments from disaster woweeeeeeeee.”
Although the sound crew eventually managed to get the microphone to work, the anxiety levels of many were already through the roof.
“I was right there filming this also. I was freaking out what would happen if they couldn’t get the tech to work!!!” one use wrote on Facebook, as another commented on Instagram, “I know it ended well, but I was still anxious.”
Others commended Snoop for remaining cool, calm and collected, calling him “the consummate professional under unprofessional circumstances”.
The mic eventually turned on as teasers of the rapper’s biggest hits blasted through stadium.
“It’s showtime!” he shouted to the crowd, while flanked by a marching band and dancers in blue and white cheerleader uniforms.
Snoop was met with thunderous applause and cheers as he headlined the pre-match entertainment, walking out to his mega-hit The Next Episode as pyrotechnics filled the arena.
During his set, Snoop brought out Australian superstar singer Jessica Mauboy for a duet on his track Beautiful, and Yolngu rapper Baker Boy who played an electric didgeridoo feature on the track Still D.R.E.
Australian singer Tash Sultana also joined the festivities as lead guitarist, as the crowd were treated to several Snoop hits, including crowd favourites Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang and Drop It Like It’s Hot, as well as Sweat, Signs, and Gin and Juice.
There were no technical difficulties at Snoop’s later gig across the border in Sydney, where he made a mad dash from the airport to Bella Vista Hotel in Sydney’s Northwest for a performance.
No mic issues but fans were not impressed by Snoop’s lateness, with some waiting at least five hours to see him onstage.
The rapper was due to perform at the venue’s new music space Bella Live, but he didn’t arrive until after 1.30am and took to the stage even later.
He was originally advertised to perform at 9pm, but the set times changed on early Saturday night with a DJ kicking off the event instead and Snoop’s performance moved to midnight.
When the timing shifted again and he hit the stage just after 2am, concertgoers were not happy.
“I was tired and bored waiting for him. Because at 11.30pm, they said Snoop was 1 hour away,” concertgoer Shama Szabo told news.com.au. “Then at 1am, they said he’s still 20 minutes away. Then at 1.20am, I walked out.”
“So many people walked out with me. People were mad,” she added. “We paid for this concert and I bought 5 tickets. It felt like a waste of money.”
