US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Democratic mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, branding him a “self-proclaimed Communist” and warning that a Mamdani victory would spell trouble for New York City. Posting on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday, Trump claimed that Mamdani would face unprecedented resistance from Washington if elected to City Hall.
Trump warns of fund freeze
“Self-proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party,” Trump wrote. He added that Mamdani would struggle to secure federal funds, saying, “Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfil all of his FAKE Communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him?”
Trump’s intervention comes a day after Mayor Eric Adams announced he was withdrawing from the race under pressure from Trump and Republican party leaders. Adams’ exit paves the way for former Governor Andrew Cuomo to consolidate support as the principal challenger to Mamdani in the November election.
Trump further framed Mamdani’s policies as politically disastrous, stating: “This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years. It will fail again, and that’s guaranteed!”
Mamdani responds to Trump
Mamdani, however, dismissed Trump’s warnings, suggesting the president was “going through the stages of grief” over the possibility of a Mamdani win. Speaking to reporters, the candidate portrayed the threats of funding cuts and political obstruction as mere theatrics.
“I think that Donald Trump is going through the stages of grief,” Mamdani said. “He began with denial — saying there was no way we could win this race and that he would use every tool at his disposal to stop us.”
Mamdani’s retort highlights a campaign already charged with national attention, as the former president positions himself as a central figure influencing local politics.
NYC elections
With the election approaching, the New York City mayoral race has become a focal point for broader political tensions, reflecting competing visions for the city’s future. Trump’s commentary frames the contest not just as a local election, but as a litmus test for federal-city relations under a potentially radical left-wing administration.
Mamdani’s campaign, meanwhile, continues to stress progressive policies and grassroots support.
