The star-studded Mets missed the playoffs with Sunday’s loss to the Miami Marlins. It sent the club straight into reflection mode while other teams prep for the postseason. Following the meltdown, the designer of the roster shouldered all the blame—“I’m the architect of the team. I’m responsible for it,” said David Stearns on Monday. With October baseball just hours away, the Mets’ meltdown is still fresh on everyone’s mind. To no surprise, the loss cut deepest for a Mets diehard. Deep enough that cross-town rival legend Alex Rodriguez offered a kind gesture.
After all, it’s a pretty big deal. It’s the same club that went 38-55 beginning on June 13, only to complete one of the most painful meltdowns in the history of majors. And so, Frank “The Tank” Fleming, who is a well-known Mets superfan and Barstool Sports personality, received a thoughtful check-in from Alex Rodriguez.
In the recent episode of Barstool Sports, Frank Fleming was asked if anybody reached out to him to make sure he’s doing fine. He replied, “Oh yeah, A-Rod.” Further, he added, “A-Rod’s a great guy, and hopefully we’ll be able to get a walk with him. We’re looking forward to that.” Despite the Mets-Yankees rivalry, Alex Rodriguez made this caring move. In fact, he even reposted Barstool’s post and noted, “Had to check in on my guy…”

Well, following the Mets’ regular-season finale loss, Frank Fleming has been all over X. In fact, the Cincinnati Reds even used one of Fleming’s clips to announce that they’ve clinched a postseason berth with the caption, “WHO IS GOING TO THE POSTSEASON?” The Reds then answered that with using one of Fleming’s old clips where he’s yelling—“THE REDS. THE REDS. THE REDS!!!!”

The Reds, despite surrendering their regular-season finale game 4-2 to the Milwaukee Brewers, made it to the playoffs, thanks to the Mets’ meltdown. The Mets’ end of the 2025 season was bad enough that the Mets’ owner felt the need to issue an apology publicly.

When the Mets signed Juan Soto to a historic $765 million contract, it reflected how badly they wanted to win the World Series this year. The expectations were high for the Metsies, especially because the Mets are MLB’s second-highest payroll club.

On Monday morning, Steve Cohen took to X and issued an apology to the netizens for the team’s failure, as they couldn’t make it to the playoffs.
The apology read: “Mets fans everywhere. I owe you an apology. You did your part by showing up and supporting the team. We didn’t do our part and we will do a post-mortem and figure out the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team didn’t perform up to your and my expectations. We are all feeling raw emotions today. I know how much time and effort you have put into this team. The result was unacceptable. Your emotions tell me how much you care and continues to motivate the organization to do better. Thank You to the best fans in sports.”
Cohen called the 2025 season “unacceptable” and also gave due credit to the fans for showing up and supporting the team despite the lack of success they deserved. It’s not common for team owners to go straight on their socials and share a message like this.

He bought the Mets back in 2020 and has since regularly communicated with fans on social media. Cohen’s disappointment is so natural at this point. He had set a target of up to four titles in the next decade since signing Juan Soto.
Moving forward, there could be some shifts in the roster, but one thing Cohen will not be doing is changing managers.
