The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has confirmed that the government is actively addressing the ongoing threats of strike action, including the indefinite strike declared by the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), a member of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Ghana.
In a statement, Dr. Pelpuo acknowledged the concerns raised by TEWU-TUC, Ghana, and emphasized that the government is not only focused on resolving the union’s specific grievances but is also working on a broader, more comprehensive solution that addresses the demands of other unions currently threatening to take similar action.
Speaking to JoyNews, Dr. Pelpuo outlined that the government is engaging in dialogue with TEWU leadership and other key stakeholders in an effort to prevent further disruptions in the country’s workforce. “While we could address each demand separately, this piecemeal approach would only exacerbate existing tensions and complicate matters further,” he explained. “Instead, we are considering a more holistic approach to ensure a fair and sustainable solution for all involved.”
Dr. Pelpuo also disclosed that the Ministry of Finance is spearheading the initiative to find a resolution, with the government optimistic that a mutually beneficial agreement will soon be reached. “We are committed to finding a solution that addresses the legitimate concerns of workers, while ensuring the continued progress of our nation’s development,” he added.
TEWU-TUC, Ghana’s strike is a response to long standing frustrations over delayed Conditions of Service agreements. Despite multiple engagements and follow-ups with the government, the union claims that little to no progress has been made, prompting the indefinite strike.
The strike action is set to impact various sectors, including technical and public universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, affecting the services of thousands of employees.
As the government works toward a resolution, Dr. Pelpuo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to ensuring that all parties are heard and that a fair, long-term solution is reached. “Our goal is to foster cooperation and ensure the well-being of the workforce, which remains integral to the growth and stability of the country,” he concluded.
