GVMC clears 1,053 encroachments in Visakhapatnam in two days

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) cleared around 1,053 establishments illegally occupying public spaces across various parts of the city as part of its anti-encroachment drive “Operation Lungs” in the last two days (September 18-19, 2025). The evictions are being taken up by the Town Planning wing in coordination with the city police.

Around 529 shops, food trucks, and constructions were cleared by officials on Friday (September 19) and 524 on Thursday (September 18) from major localities including Bheemunipatnam, Tagarapuvalasa, Midhilapuri Colony, Thotagaruvu Junction, Ambedkar Junction, RTC Complex, Old Jail Road, Diamond Park, Siripuram Junction, Peda Waltair, Jagadamba Junction, DLB Grounds, Vimana Nagar, Nehru Chowk, and Old Gajuwaka.

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said that the primary objective of the drive is to ensure smooth traffic flow, hassle-free transport, and unobstructed pedestrian movement on footpaths. He added that the corporation has been receiving a large number of complaints about such encroachments through PGRS and other platforms.
