It seems almost strange to remember there was a time when Djokovic lost Grand Slam finals, considering the sheer number he has won since.
Back in 2016, though, Wawrinka came from a set down to beat him at the US Open and claim his third major title.
Following that defeat, Djokovic gave his thoughts on whether Wawrinka should be considered part of an expanded ‘Big Five’.
“Well, I mean, he deserves to be in the mix, no doubt about it. Stan won three Grand Slams now and three different ones; an Olympic medal. Been around for so many years, and he plays best in the big matches.
“I mean, he definitely deserves to be mentioned in the mix of top players.
“He loves to play in the big matches. He comes up with his best game. He’s so solid from both corners. He’s got a good slice and an amazing one-handed backhand, all corners. Big serve. Moves well.
“He’s a very complete player. Sometimes if he feels right, he doesn’t miss much and makes a lot of winners and it’s hard to play him. That’s what happened today.”
Wawrinka part of the elite group
In fairness to Wawrinka – and also Murray – they deserve immense credit for even being able to stay at the top of the sport during that period.
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Djokovic each securing at least 20 major titles made it nearly impossible for other players to compete effectively.
So, for them both to end their careers with three major titles is a serious achievement.
The US Open final in 2016 was a clear reminder of how well Wawrinka could compete against the best on his day. Djokovic recognised this after that match, and fans enjoyed seeing someone outside the usual trio get over the line again.
