A ‘terrifying’ Netflix mystery thriller about a town’s dark secrets has left fans unable to sleep.

After racing up the streaming platform’s top 10 rankings, Canadian comedian Mae Martin’s new limited series Wayward is gaining major traction amongst viewers.

The eight-episode drama is set in the seemingly idyllic town of Tall Pines, which contains an academy that is supposedly a haven for ‘troubled teens’.

Inspired in part by Martin’s own experience of being labelled ‘a wayward teen in the early 2000s’, the series sees police officer Alex (Martin) cross paths with best friends Abbie and Leila, who are plotting their escape from Tall Pines Academy.

Alex (who is a non-binary trans man and uses they/them pronouns) vows to help the pair break out and expose the sinister secrets lurking behind the school, which is run by Evelyn Wade (Toni Collette).

Since the show’s release last week, Netflix viewers have flocked to social media to share how ‘hooked’ they are by the series.

@RitaGirl95 also wrote: ‘This is day 2 of watching #wayward and I’m hooked.’

What’s in the Netflix top 10 right now?

As of this week, the current top 10 TV shows on Netflix in the UK are:

House of Guinness

Special Ops: Lioness
Inside: USA
Alice in Borderland

Black Rabbit
The Escape Artist

WWE SmackDown

@1Kynara wrote: ‘Wayward on Netflix is a 10/10 from start to finish. It’s so detailed. The characters backstories are well explained.

‘[And] to top it off Toni Collette’s performance was excellent. Definitely will pull you in & have you binge watching real bad.’

Meanwhile, @SlaineMi claimed that the show would be a ‘perfect book’ and said that they ‘loved the plot’.

An official synopsis for the series reads: ‘A small-town cop suspects that the local school for troubled teens and its dangerously charismatic founder may not be all it seems.’

This comes after Netflix fans also found themselves unable to stop bingeing a series that was recently released.

House of Guinness, created by Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight, follows the story of the Guinness family who founded the world-famous brewery.

Set in the 19th century, the series picks up as millionaire and philanthropist Sir Benjamin Guinness dies, leaving his four children to pick up the family business and continue his legacy.

The series currently holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with all eight episodes available on Netflix.

Wayward is available to watch on Netflix.
