Muslim Personal Law Board calls out SC’s ‘silence’ on key waqf issues

The working committee of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed dissatisfaction over the Supreme Court’s decision to curb the powers of Collectors and its stand on Waqf-by-User, while voicing concern over the “silence” on several other provisions.

In a statement issued on Friday, the AIMPLB said the meeting, chaired by its president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, found several aspects of the order disappointing, including the withdrawal of waqf status from properties under the Archaeological Survey of India, mandatory registration of waqf properties, removal of exemption from the Law of Limitation and inclusion of non-Muslims in Waqf bodies.

The Board said its struggle was not confined to the apex court’s interim order but against what it termed the government’s policy of targeting Muslim endowments. Members expressed hope that the final verdict would be just, and expressed their resolve to continue efforts until the government withdraws the amendments and restores the earlier Waqf Act.
