Petawawa’s organizer, Pauline Lythgoe, brings her own story of service to the event. Lythgoe served more than 20 years in both the Army and the Air Force before retiring in March 2025. Earlier this year, she represented Canada at the Invictus Games in swimming and wheelchair curling as part of an all-women’s team.
“The Games were a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and community that veterans share,” Lythgoe said in an online media release. Since retiring, she has continued to serve by volunteering with Operational Stress Injury Social Support (OSISS) in Petawawa, helping veterans and families facing the challenges of injuries, operational stress, and civilian life.
“In this role, I’ve seen first-hand the challenges veterans and their families face. Many carry invisible wounds from service, including physical injuries, operational stress, and the daily adjustments of civilian life. Supporting these veterans and their loved ones has become a central focus of my post-military life,” Lythgoe said.
This year’s theme, “Honouring the Past; Supporting the Journey”, recognizes milestone anniversaries for Canadian veterans, including the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 75th anniversary of Canadian involvement in the Korean War. While many veterans are now seniors, nearly one-third are between the ages of 25 and 54, reflecting the ongoing need for support across generations.
Walks will be held in 23 locations across Canada, including Petawawa, as well as internationally in London, England. Proceeds from the 2025 event will go to local and national organizations, and the True Patriot Love Foundation, which provides funding to local and national mental health programs, recovery and rehabilitation programs, and other vital supports for veterans, service members, and their families.
Participants will receive a 2025 Canadian Walk for Veterans challenge coin, designed by veteran-owned Sharkz Coins of Esquimalt, B.C. The coin depicts the transition from military to civilian life, symbolizing both service and the journey home.
Those unable to attend in person can register for a Virtual Walk and participate at their own pace and location.
National level sponsors of the Canadian Walk for Veterans include Postmedia, Canada House, and Post-Traumatic Growth Association.
