The Rewind: UAA volleyball continues to roll, cross country runners shine outside of Alaska

Welcome back to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.
This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school and professional levels, as well as some developments on the college front. The 2025 season for high school flag and tackle football saw a top contender notch their first loss of the year. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team got off to its best start in three years. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.
Headlines and highlights
The seventh week of the high school football season was highlighted by commanding victories. Only two games in the state were decided by one possession: Both took place Friday in Anchorage and saw Bartlett and Service come out on top in their CIC clashes with defensive stands.

On Saturday, the most notable victory was South Anchorage’s 37-6 thrashing of Dimond. Not only did it come against the reigning Division I state champions, but it pulled the Wolverines into a tie with previously undefeated West for the top spot in the Cook Inlet Conference standings heading into the final week. The Wolverines’ sixth straight victory was powered by a prolific rushing performance from senior running back Ethan Yarrington, who racked up over 150 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
“Leading to Saturday, our team knew how hard we needed to work to reach our true potential versus Dimond,” he said. “Practice was 110% and we would stay after and do extra work knowing we may not need it, but we want it. When we came out in our first drive of the game, we knew we were going to score and our determination got us there. I racked up yards behind my line, who were all driven by heart, including me.”
In flag football action, Dimond avenged its first loss of the season by beating rival South 26-6 at home on Saturday. Both teams had identical records heading into the CIC clash, and fueled by a four-touchdown performance from senior quarterback Kinsey MacDonald, the Lynx were able to take over sole possession of first place in the conference standings heading into the final week of the regular season.
On the prep volleyball scene, Dimond reigns supreme in the CIC and statewide. The Lynx remained undefeated in regular season nontournament action after beating defensive Division I state champion Wasilla in four sets on the road last Thursday. Sophomore Anayah Sila led the team with 11 kills. She was only one to reach double figures in that stat and nearly had a double-double by recording the third-most digs with 9.

At the collegiate level, the UAA volleyball team remains undefeated since beginning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference portion of its 2025 schedule, winning two more matches last week.
“This is a very strong conference,” junior outside hitter Lee Ivakina said. “It’s a good level of play … and it’s hard to win every time, but I think we just have to keep (working) hard and keep doing the same and more.”
The Seawolves returned from a two-week stint on the road and extended their winning streak to six in a row after beating Western Oregon in four sets in their home conference opener Thursday. They followed it up with a three-set sweep of Saint Martin’s on Saturday night. Ivakina recorded double-doubles and led the team in kills in both matches, recording 26 and 29 digs between the two combined.
“Lee is such an athlete, she jumps very well and hits the ball hard,” UAA head coach Stacie Meisner said. “We really rely on her to put balls away for us in tight situations, and she’s an excellent athlete and she’s a great person and a great teammate. She works really hard in the gym and at practice and is really invested at getting better every single day and improving every part of her game.”

The University of Alaska Fairbanks volleyball team also stayed undefeated in conference play last week by notching four-set wins over the same two opponents. After extending their impressive win streak to 11 in a row, the Nanooks are now nationally ranked for the first time in program history, coming in at No. 23 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.
The UAA cross country team were down in Monmouth, Oregon, last week for the Mike Johnson Classic and Anchorage’s Ty Elliott broke out in a big way by being the only Seawolf to crack the top 10 in either division. With his mark of 24:14, the junior formerly of Grace Christian fame came in fifth in the men’s race to help the team finish third.
The UAA men’s hockey team officially opened its 2025-26 campaign with a bang by blowing out visiting Briercrest 12-0 in a home exhibition bout. Seventeen players recorded a point, and all three of the Seawolves’ goalies saw playing time and made multiple saves.
Up in the Interior, the UAF men’s hockey team also took the ice for some exhibition action and notched a pair of shutout victories, blanking UNLV 3-0 on Friday and Briercrest 12-0 on Saturday.
Sticking with hockey, the Anchorage Wolverines remained away from home this past week and went 1-2 at the 22nd annual NAHL Showcase down in Blaine, Minnesota. They started off with a 5-1 loss to the Lone Star Brahmas on Wednesday, bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Rebels on Thursday and fell to the Minot Minotauros on Saturday. Brother forwards Luc and Rylan Bydal took turns having two-goal games to tie for the team lead over the three-day event.
“We played together probably like eight years ago, so it’s good now to get with him,” Luc said via NAHL about playing with his younger brother Rylan. “I didn’t know if we’d have chemistry but but we clearly do, so it’s been good playing with him.”
Alaska stars shining Outside
Anchorage’s Brandon Pili appeared in his second regular-season game for the Seattle Seahawks and first in prime time in Week 4, helping the team to a thrilling 23-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday. The third-year nose tackle was elevated from the practice squad and was on the field for eight snaps on defense and one on special teams. He recorded his first tackle of the season when he combined forces with veteran outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu to make a stop on a run play in the first half.

Anchorage’s Tyree Wilson continued his breakout third season for the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday in the team’s 25-24 loss to the Chicago Bears. The former top-10 pick recorded his second solo tackle for loss, a sack and third quarterback hit of the season in 31 defensive snaps and played another five on special teams.
Anchorage’s Deuce Zimmerman has yet to cool down during his hot start to the season for the Western New Mexico University football team. This past Saturday, the former East star had a fifth straight prolific performance in a 91-31 loss to Central Washington University. He finished second on the Mustangs in receiving yards with 96 on seven receptions and had a touchdown hat trick by hauling in a trio of scores, including a long catch of 24 yards.
After striking out on his home soil in Alaska during high school, Homer’s Seamus McDonough is now a state champion. The former Mariner turned Bowdoin College Polar Bear led the program’s men’s team to a third-place finish at the 2025 Maine State Championship meet by claiming the individual crown for himself with a first-place time of 25 minutes, 46.8 seconds.
Anchorage’s David Sliwinski was McDonough’s rival in high school and the main one who kept him from finishing first at the Division II level. The former Grace Christian star and Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year helped power the Air Force Academy men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational by being the second Falcon to cross the finish line in sixth place overall with a time of 24:27.2.
Anchorage’s Landon Drumm had another big game for the Arapahoe High School football team in Centennial, Colorado. The former South star and All State wide receiver was an all-around playmaker for the Warriors in a 33-14 win over Rock Canyon last Thursday. Drumm made his presence felt in all three phases by racking up 145 all-purpose yards between offense and special teams as a returner and recorded a sack on defense.
