Mr Travis said: “This isn’t just about logistics – it’s about creating skilled and unskilled jobs, supporting a range of local businesses, and reinforcing Barnsley’s position as a thriving hub for investment and enterprise.
“The chamber is pleased to see continued investment in our area, which clearly demonstrates that Barnsley (and Rotherham) is a place where business can grow and succeed.”
Evri’s capacity is also being increased at other centres such as Southampton and Bury St Edmunds, as well as a new depot opening in Belfast.
Martijn de Lange, chief executive of the Evri Group, said the firm was on track to deliver more than a billion parcels and a billion letters a year globally.
He said it had been a “historic year” for the company.
He added that the firm would “invest significantly in our operation to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our clients and customers, especially at the busiest time of the year for our industry”.
