Ex-Google CEO Warns US Workers Over Work Life Balance Trade-Offs Needed to Compete with China
Eric Schmidt, Ex CEO of Google, is warning American tech workers that remote work isn’t helping US tech companies better compete with China’s cutthroat work culture. He opines that competing with China means sacrificing work-life balance. While this is something that some may not like, Eric believes that such tradeoffs are the way to win the tech race.
Ex-Google CEO is warning US tech workers about the race with China
During a conference interview published by the All-In podcast, Eric Schmidt says that the Chinese work-life balance consists of “966.” This is 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week. “If you are going to be in tech and you are going to win, you are going to have to make some tradeoffs,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt was previously critical of Google for its easy-going policies on remote work and productivity. Talking at Stanford University last year, Eric said Google decided that having a work-life balance is more important than “winning.” However, this video was later taken down, and Schmidt took back his comments.
China is not pursuing AGI strategies
Eric said that he thought that the US and China were competing at a peer level in AI. He added that the “good work” of White House in restricting chips was limiting and slowing them down. However, he admits that China is doing something different from what he thought.
