50 widows get food, cash gifts from Abuja-based NGO

From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

Over 50 widows from different parts of Abuja have benefitted from the annual community outreach organised by a non-governmental organization (NGO), Angel of Light, in its outreach titled “Let Your Light Shine”.

The NGO said the outreach was one of the series of events to mark the birthday of its founder, Mrs. Angela Ohuabunwa, who is also the wife of the General Managing Director, Love FM Abuja.

At the event held at the premises of the Crowther Radio Love FM, Abuja, the women were exposed to several opportunities that would empower them, and guarantee their financial independence, thus making them useful to themselves and their children.

In addition to that, there were health talks, human relationship talks especially with families and neighbours, as well as other education and empowerments for a better life.

Speaking to journalists during the event, the founder of the NGO said the inspiration came from an encounter she had a few years ago with some widows which exposed to the horrible experiences widows face in Nigeria, and even beyond.

“After the experience, I decided to use whatever I have to periodically reach out to these women. I also try to mobilise my family and friends to support the gesture so that more widows could enjoy the largesse.

“We started with a few widows some years ago. We have continued to add more widows to the fold. We hope that with more financial and logistics support, we will reach more widows.”

On the criteria used in selecting the widows, Mrs. Ohuabunwa, said a call was put out in the Love FM radio, Abuja, for interested persons to come and benefits. “Many women indicated interest, but we invited the ones we could carter for. We wish we could do more, but we have limited resources.”

The General Manager, Love FM Radio, Abuja, Mrs. Lilian Anene, explained that the outreach started formally in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has continued to grow in leaps and bound.

She appreciated the founder of the NGO and encouraged the widows to make good use of their cash gifts and food items, as well as knowledge received during the event

She assured that God will continue to send help to them in whatever way that would help to uplift their lives.

A widow, Gloria Odey, prayed for a long life and
wellbeing of the donor, Angela Ohuabunwa, and also asked God to replenish her pocket. “I have three children that my husband left for me. I will use the cash gift to support their education. The school has been asking for the fees. So, I will use the money to settle the fees.”
