Starbucks announced recently that 900 of its workers will be laid off, and coffee shops will be closed around the country — including dozens in New York City, some of which are unionized.
The local store closures come after an announcement from Starbucks that select locations would close after a review spanning all of North America as part of the chain’s “Back to Starbucks” plan.
Brian Niccol, chief executive officer of Starbucks, said in a letter to employees on Thursday, that those shops that are not creating “the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance” will be closed.
The closings will cost the chain about $1 billion, according to a public regulatory filing.
The list was outlined in a public Google document shared by AMNY.
Although some locations are unionized, a Starbucks spokesperson told AMNY that it “was not a factor” in the decision-making process.

Since numerous coffeehouses were opened over the past year, the overall company-operated count in North America will decline by about 1% in fiscal year 2025 after accounting for both openings and closures, the CEO said.
Starbucks will end the fiscal year with nearly 18,300 locations across the United States and Canada. Over the next 12 months, the company said it plans to uplift more than 1,000 locations to “introduce greater texture, warmth, and layered design.”
Niccol said generous severance and support packages, including benefits extensions, will be offered.
The company is working hard to offer transfers to nearby locations where possible and will quickly help partners understand available opportunities, he said in the letter.
