€17,963.80 project improves Orihuela tourism

The Orihuela City Council has awarded two contracts worth a total of €50,935.51 to implement a digital guidance system and install 16 informative ”totems” at key monuments and museums across the municipality. The initiative aims to make the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage more accessible, particularly for those with sensory impairments.

The first contract focuses on the acquisition of specific licences and DdTags, which will be installed at museums, monuments, notable buildings, and other sites of cultural and tourist interest in Orihuela City and Orihuela Costa. The technology will allow visitors to access detailed, tailored information, enhancing their experience and promoting inclusivity.

The second contract covers the installation of 16 informative totems at the main entrances of monuments and museums within Orihuela’s historic centre, which has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest under the category of Historic Ensemble. The totems will provide accessible information about the city’s cultural and heritage resources, supporting both locals and visitors and enriching the tourist experience.

Totems will be installed at prominent sites including the Colegio Diocesano Santo Domingo, Casa Museo Miguel Hernández, Museo de Semana Santa, the Cathedral of the Saviour, Palacio Episcopal, Museo de la Muralla, Real Monasterio de la Visitación de Santa María, Iglesia Parroquial de las Santas Justa y Rufina, Palacio Marqués de Arneva, Museo de la Reconquista, Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol, Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Monserrate, Teatro Circo Atanasio Die, Palmeral de San Antón, Museo Arqueológico Comarcal de Orihuela, and the Murales de San Isidro.

Both projects are funded by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, using European Union, Next Generation EU funds. The installation of the totems is scheduled to be completed within three months, with Benito Urbano, S.L. appointed as the contractor for a total of €25,042.50.

This programme forms part of the City Council’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility and promoting inclusive tourism. By combining cutting-edge digital technology with informative on-site signage, Orihuela ensures that all visitors can enjoy its cultural and historical treasures, regardless of physical or sensory limitations.
