Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is weighing a run for US President in 2028, according to a report that suggests the progressive lawmaker is exploring her political future beyond the House of Representatives. The 35-year-old “Squad” member and prominent left-wing voice is also considering a Senate campaign, Axios reported citing people in the know. Her team is said to be building infrastructure that would allow her to choose between challenging Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his New York seat or making a historic bid for the White House.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of Queens and the Bronx, has been working to expand her presence across the country. This summer she toured upstate New York and joined Senator Bernie Sanders on his nationwide “Fighting Oligarchy” tour. Her operation has also poured millions into social media outreach and donor list-building, in a bid to expand her grassroots fundraising power.
Bernie Sanders aide Ari Rabin-Havt told Axios, “She has a supporter base that, in many ways, has a larger potential width than Bernie’s. She has been in the glare of the spotlight from day one and has the national campaigning experience a lot of other potential candidates are now trying to get.”
If Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pursues the Senate route, she would likely face Chuck Schumer, who has not confirmed whether he will run for reelection. The Brooklyn Democrat secured a fifth term in 2022 in a race that drew no serious challenge from the left.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has not shied from criticizing Democratic leadership, recently taking aim at Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for failing to endorse Zohran Mamdani, the party’s nominee for New York mayor.
