Three Nebraska students, including two from Omaha, have been named 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars.
Elise Renee Cherek of Millard North High School, Mason R. Miller of Elkhorn North High School and Sarah Lange of Raymond Central Junior-Senior High School are the recently graduated high school students from Nebraska to be honored, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Education.
The program honored 161 students nationwide this year, according to the release. The program annually selects a young man and a young woman from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 students selected at-large, 20 scholars in the arts and 20 scholars in career and technical education.
Lange was one of the students selected for her achievements in career and technical education.
“Congratulations to this year’s Presidential Scholars for their remarkable academic, artistic and technical achievements,” Linda McMahon, secretary of education, said in the release. “Out of 3.9 million high school graduates, these 161 students are recognized for their extraordinary performance in their high school career. I look forward to seeing all they accomplish in their future.”
More than 6,400 high school seniors qualified for the 2025 awards based on their performance on the SAT or ACT exam or through nominations, according to the release.
Candidates are evaluated by a review commitee and then the Commission on Presidential Scholars based on their academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership, service activities and an essay, according to the program website.
The program has honored more than 8,600 students since it began in 1964.
