The University of Tulsa’s nursing and kinesiology programs are returning to the university’s main campus after 10 years in the former Blue Cross Blue Shield Building at 1215 S. Boulder.
The move is part of a financial restructuring that will also include sale of the Henneke Building at 1204 S. Harvard Ave., and the introduction of new online programs.
TU “is actively working to respond to changes in the higher education landscape and fiscal downturns that have affected the university directly,” an email from the university said.
The School of Nursing and Department of Kinesiology, which have occupied five floors of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Building since 2015, will move into Chapman Hall on TU’s main campus east of downtown.
TU’s nursing program began in Chapman Hall in 1973.
The Henneke Building was built by Southwestern Bell as a telephone exchange building in the 1920s. In recent years the Art Deco building has housed archives and offices.
The university said it expects the building to go up for sale next year.
Among other measures being taken by the university are the new online programs, including an array of master’s of business administration; new revenue streams, including the use of university facilities for “public events, such as concerts, as well as private gatherings, such as weddings and other celebrations”; and greater use of automation and artificial intelligence for “low-level tasks.”
TU said tasks that can be automated or accomplished more quickly with the help of artificial intelligence are being identified so staff can focus on high-level projects. TU said its trustees have “prioritized salaries and benefits in order to preserve jobs.”
