Trump Threatens To Hold NYC Funding Hostage If Mamdani Becomes Mayor

President Donald Trump warned Monday that he’ll starve New York City of federal funding if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election.
Trump’s threat came after New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the end of his mayoral reelection campaign on Sunday. The New York mayoral race is now a three-man competition between Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

In a scathing Truth Social post on Monday, Trump, who hails from New York City, vowed to withhold funds to the Big Apple if Mamdani wins the race.
“Self proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party,” he wrote. “He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City.”
Trump then claimed that Mamdani “needs the money” from him.
“Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises,” he continued.

Trump added: “He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him? This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years. It will fail again, and that’s guaranteed!”
Last week, New York state scored a win in its lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security for withholding disaster relief from the state due to its immigration enforcement policies.
If Trump were to withhold federal funds allocated to New York City, similar legal challenges would likely follow.

Trump has been accused of interfering in New York’s mayoral race to help Cuomo, with whom he has previously been at odds, defeat Mamdani.
In June’s Democratic primary, Mamdani beat Cuomo by 12 points.
Mamdani, who is leading in the polls, responded to Trump’s post during a campaign stop on Monday. He accused Trump of “going through the stages of grief” over his potential victory in the race.

“I think that Donald Trump is going through the stages of grief,” he said. “He began with denial, where he said there was no way we could win this race, and he would use every tool at his disposal to ensure that that was the case.”
Mamdani added: “He’s coming to terms with it because New Yorkers are tired of a politics here in this city that has more to do with Washington than it has to do with the people of this same city.”

Mamdani’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
Earlier this month, Trump also falsely referred to Mamdani as a “communist” when he opined that “Cuomo might have a chance of winning, if it was a one-on-one. If it’s not one-on-one, it’s going to be a hard race.”

Trump added: “And we’ll get used to a communist, and we’ll get used to a communist, and he’s going to have to go through the White House and get approvals for everything, and we’re going to make sure New York is not hurt. We want to make sure that New York is cherished and taken care of.”
