TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Chinese state media reported that a court has sentenced former Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Tang Renjian to death with a two-year reprieve after finding him guilty of accepting massive bribes.According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, the court in Jilin Province handed down the ruling on Sunday, as cited by NHK.The court stated that between 2007 and 2024, Tang abused his positions of power to secure benefits for others in areas such as business operations, project contracts, and job placements. In return, Tang received cash and valuables totaling more than 268 million yuan, equivalent to around Rp626 billion.China’s anti-corruption watchdog announced in May that Tang was under investigation for suspected disciplinary and legal violations. At the time, he was still serving as agriculture minister. He was dismissed from his post roughly four months later. The case is part of a sweeping anti-corruption drive under President Xi Jinping, which has targeted senior officials across both government and the military.Analysts say the campaign reflects Xi’s efforts to enforce party discipline while showcasing the leadership’s determination to combat corruption to the public.Editor’s Choice: China Proposes AI+ Global Cooperation Initiative at UN MeetingClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
