Gary restaurant hosts grand opening
Paige & Charlie’s Coney Island will host a grand opening from 12-2 p.m. Saturday at its newly reopened location, 2490 Broadway in Gary. The event features live music and complimentary drinks with a purchase. Paige & Charlie’s Coney Island is a collaboration between Tiffany, granddaughter of Charlie Larken and the Larken family — continuing the legacy of the original Charlie’s Coney Island — and Pastor Dexter Harris and his wife, Paige Harris, of Flourish Church. This partnership honors the beloved restaurant’s history while ushering in a new chapter for the family business, according to a release.
Purdue Extension offers Nourish Your Body program series
Purdue Extension Lake County will host the Nourish Your Body program series to help adults gain valuable information and strategies for improving their nutrition and overall wellness. All classes will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Purdue Extension-Lake County, 2291 N. Main St., Crown Point. Faith CDC to host red carpet premiere of groundbreaking documentary
Families Anchored In Total Harmony, Inc. (Faith CDC), in partnership with Progressive Faith Productions, will host the red carpet premiere of its first feature-length documentary, “Nourishing Lives: The Power of Food is Medicine.” The premiere will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 16, at Indiana University Northwest’s Savannah Hall, 3400 Broadway, Gary. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Directed by Senator Mark Spencer, this film explores how Faith CDC is working with medical providers and community partners to confront chronic disease, food insecurity and health inequities in Northwest Indiana. Following the screening, guests will have the opportunity to engage in a panel discussion featuring documentary participants, local policymakers and community partners. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Porter County Health Department to host Community Baby Shower
The Porter County Health Department, in partnership with the Porter County Community Foundation, First Things First Porter County and HealthLinc, will host its Inaugural Community Baby Shower, “Fall in Love,” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Porter County Community Foundation Building, 1401 Calumet Ave., Valparaiso. This event will provide expecting parents and families with resources, education and giveaways to support safe and healthy beginnings. Recycling and Waste Reduction District to hold a Fix-It Fair
The Recycling and Waste District of Porter County will host its last Fix-It Fair of 2025 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Porter County Public Library System’s Valparaiso Branch, 103 Jefferson St. A community-driven event focused on sustainability and skill-sharing, this free Fix-It Fair is designed to help community members breathe new life into their beloved but broken items, rather than discarding them. Expert volunteers will be on hand to offer free repair services and guidance for a wide variety of items, including, but not limited to: sewing; jewelry; small appliances; IT troubleshooting and computers; electronics; clocks and lamps; and tools and small furniture. Attendees are asked to register to ensure volunteers are prepared to make appropriate repairs. PNW offers campus preview event for prospective college students
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) invites prospective college students and their families to attend Preview PNW from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 18 on the Hammond campus, 2200 169th St., Hammond. The event provides information about the university’s academic programs, admissions process and paying for college. The open-house experience offers prospective students the opportunity to explore the campus, meet PNW faculty and staff, tour the campus, and learn about PNW’s student organizations and varsity athletic teams. Complementary refreshments will be available. Admissions counselors and financial aid professionals will be available throughout the day to answer questions and assist in the application process. Application fees will be waived for prospective students who attend an admissions presentation and complete an application during the event.
