The majority of Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services through the station were suspended, but lines have now re-opened and operators are working to restore services.
A Govia Thameslink spokesperson said: “Gatwick Airport station reopened at around 2pm once we were able to get services back on the move on the mainline again.
“Trains will be disrupted until the end of the day, so we’re telling customers to check before they travel – as their usual train might be delayed or cancelled.”
Tickets are being accepted on local bus routes and other train lines, including Southeastern and South Western Railway.
Multiple issues caused the disruption, including two separate police incidents earlier on Monday, plus signalling problems and a fault on a train.
Three Bridges station has also since reopened after an earlier connected closure.
Passengers have been advised to delay journeys until later where possible and to check before they travel.
