One of Malawi’s celebrated female musicians, Ritaa, has spoken out strongly against rumors linking her to former Cabinet Minister Vitumbiko Mumba.
The songstress expressed frustration over claims circulating on social media suggesting she is in a romantic relationship with the former minister. The allegations resurfaced after an old photo from a show last year which both Ritaa and Mumba attended began making rounds online.
Ritaa, who recently purchased a new car, said some people have been using the development as “proof” of her alleged affair with the ex-minister. She has, however, dismissed the claims, insisting her success is a result of her hard work, studies, and business ventures in her live Facebook video.
“There are many things I do. I am a student, I run businesses, and I am capable of buying my own car,” Ritaa said.
The artist went further to challenge stereotypes that undermine women’s independence.
“Should women be afraid to achieve great things because they will be accused of sleeping with someone? Should we fail to shine on big stages just because of gossip?” she asked.
Ritaa stressed that she is in a stable relationship with her partner and emphasized that Mumba has his own family. She described the allegations as not only damaging to her image but also unfair to the former minister’s household.
