Accenture Layoffs: IT consulting firm Accenture has laid off 11,000 employees in the past three months. The company has warned of more layoffs in the future.
Accenture Layoffs: The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to be felt at global consulting firm Accenture. The company has laid off more than 11,000 employees worldwide. This move comes at a time when companies rapidly adopting artificial intelligence are changing their work practices and reducing their workforces.
More people to be laid off
A report in the Times of India on Saturday stated that the technology and consulting industry is experiencing widespread layoffs as the rapid adoption of AI forces companies to restructure their workforces and prioritize their business priorities.
The company has laid off such a large number of employees in the past three months. The company has also stated that if workers are unable to reskill themselves for artificial intelligence (AI), more layoffs may occur.
The Need to Adapt to Technological Changes
CEO Julie Sweet clarified that the company felt it was more appropriate to lay off employees rather than reskill them. She said, “There comes a time when technology changes, where you need to provide training and adopt new systems.”
At the end of August, the company’s employee strength was 779,000, compared to 791,000 three months earlier. The company reported spending $615 million on severance pay and other expenses in the previous quarter, and expects to incur another $250 million in the current quarter. In fact, on Thursday, the company detailed an $865 million restructuring program.
Changing Times
While it’s true that thousands of employees are leaving, the company is also emphasizing upskilling. Accenture is training over 700,000 employees worldwide in agentic AI. This investment in employee training reflects the company’s belief that the future belongs to scalable intelligent systems that automatically make decisions and act accordingly.
