Mental Health Awareness Event In SMC Looks To Eliminate Stigma

This annual event will feature yoga, a scenic 1k and 5k run, as well as various resources and food options.
SAN MATEO, CA — A nonprofit in San Mateo County is holding their annual mental health awareness event Oct. 4 in San Mateo, which aims to diminish the stigma associated with mental health conditions and to advocate for community-based programs that aid individuals facing mental health challenges.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness San Mateo County will host NAMIWalks, a free event beginning at 9 a.m. with yoga wellness programming. The open ceremony kicks off at 10 a.m.
Choose between a 1k or 5k route along the Bay. Enjoy a community resource fair with local mental health resources and hands-on activities, including affirmation rock painting, a selfie station, face painting, music and food. There’s also a dedicated children’s activity area.
“As a long-time NAMIWalks volunteer, it’s always inspiring to see the enthusiasm as we walk together to show our resilience in the face of challenges,” Ginny Traub, NAMIWalks volunteer, told Patch. “The way we cheer each other on underscores the power of coming together and reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles with mental health.”
This year, NAMI will introduce their inaugural “Pet Power for Mental Health” contest. Registrants can vote for their favorite pet and even nominate their own.
