Kpando Heart of Lions surged to the summit of the Ghana Premier League after edging out Bechem United 1-0 in a tense clash at the Kpando Stadium yesterday.
Michael Ephson emerged as the match-winner, striking decisively in the 59th minute to hand Coach Bashir Hayford’s men their third straight victory of the campaign.
The result took the Lions to nine points from three games — two clear at the top — underlining their efficient and solid start to the season.
Solid at the back and clinical when it matters, the Kpando-based side already look early contenders in the title race after finishing runners-up last season.
In Tamale, Karela United climbed into second place with a gritty 1-0 victory over Medeama at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. Felix Mortu pounced in the 79th minute to punish Medeama’s defensive lapse, despite the visitors dominating much of the contest.
The “Pride and Passion” remain unbeaten this season, a far cry from last year’s relegation worries, while Medeama slipped to fourth following their first loss of the campaign. They will seek redemption at home to Nations FC next weekend.
Vision FC off the mark
At the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema, Vision FC celebrated their first win of the season with a comfortable 2-0 triumph over newcomers, Hohoe United. Shaken by a heavy defeat to Medeama last week, Vision FC responded in style with two quick-fire goals in the second half.
Nana Kusi Asante coolly dispatched a 54th-minute penalty before Emmanuel Sanja doubled the lead two minutes later to seal the points. The victory lifted Vision to seventh on the table, leaving Hohoe United still searching for their maiden Premier League win.
In Abrankese, Nations FC dominated possession and peppered the goal with 12 attempts, yet were left frustrated after being held to a goalless stalemate by former champions FC Samartex 1996 at the Kwame Kyei Sports Complex. FC Samartex’s resilience earned them a third successive draw, cementing their status as the league’s early “draw specialists,” while Nations FC will rue their missed chances in front of a home crowd.
