The severe storms may have moved away from the Balearics but Mallorca airport continues to experience delays due to the rain that lashed the island between Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to information provided by airport authority Aena, the incidents recorded so far involve flights that were due to take off or land at Palma’s Son Sant Joan airport between approximately 10 a.m. and 12 noon.
The delays, 20 take-offs and 22 landings, are between one and two hours. The airports of Ibiza and Menorca, meanwhile, have not reported any incidents this Wednesday morning. On Tuesday the three airports experienced hundreds of delays, dozens of cancellations and several diversions to other destinations.
The heavy rains recorded throughout Tuesday and early Wednesday morning in the Balearics have caused 95 incidents, most of them due to flooding of low-lying areas and fallen trees. This is the count made by the region’s emergency services up to 8 a.m. on Wednesday, as reported by 112 on its social media account. The vast majority of incidents occurred in Mallorca, with 92, while in Menorca the services handled two incidents and in Ibiza, one.
The most affected municipalities are Palma (47 incidents), Calvia (19), Algaida (4), Andratx (4), Manacor (3), Marratxà (3) and Llucmajor (2). Those with the lowest incidence were Artà , Bunyola, Ciutadella, Deya, Escorca, Ferreries, Puigpunyent, Sant Joan, Santa Eulà ria, Santa Maria, Ses Salinas, Valldemossa and Vilafranca.
Most of the warnings have been related to flooding of low-lying areas and public roads (21), fallen trees (28) and water accumulation on the road (16). The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow warning for Wednesday in the interior and Llevant regions of Mallorca due to rain and storms. From midday onwards, rainfall of up to 30 litres per square metre in one hour is expected.
