Simone Biles has always embraced the chance to take a stand against discrimination. Having experienced challenges herself, she has transformed those moments into fuel for her strength and advocacy. The story goes back to 2013, when at just 16 years old, a fellow gymnast suggested that Biles’ international success was due to her skin color. Instead of letting it break her, it ignited a fire in her heart to champion fairness and equality. Today was no different.
Taking to her Instagram profile, the ‘Queen of Flips’ shared another powerful message through her Stories. She posted a picture of fabric resembling a sweater with the words “RACISM IS NOT AN OPINION” boldly engraved on it. It was a strong reminder from the 11-time Olympic medalist. After all, the 2013 incident wasn’t the only challenge she has faced.
In March 2022, during a GymSTART event in Dublin, a young gymnast was initially skipped during medal distribution, reportedly because of her skin color. Outrage followed after the video went viral, and Biles admitted the incident “broke her heart.” Gymnastics Ireland later investigated, mediated, and issued a written apology, with the girl eventually receiving her medal.

Though her family felt the apology fell short, Biles’ reaction reflected her deep empathy and commitment to fairness. And it’s not just racism that she continues to address – just days ago, she also showed courage in reflecting on a heated exchange with Riley Gaines.

Back in June, things between Biles and activist Riley Gaines grew tense when Gaines commented on a 17-year-old trans athlete competing in the women’s category.

Biles felt compelled to respond, but later took time to reflect. Showing maturity and grace, she turned to X and offered an apology. She wrote, “I’ve always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. The current system doesn’t adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, for which I apologize.”

Understanding the sensitivity and complexity of the issue, Biles admitted she doesn’t have all the answers. Yet, she emphasized that the journey begins with “empathy and respect.” She added, “I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition. We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful.”
Now, with recent debates surrounding sport and society, many might have expected more from Biles. Yet, she has chosen to remain thoughtful and careful with her words, showing her commitment to respect for all sides. Her latest IG Story, however, leaves no doubt about where her heart lies—on the side of fairness, empathy, and positive change.
