A Primark shopper has shared a way that anyone can stock up on a wardrobe essential without spending any extra money. The majority of clothes you buy often come without a proper way to hang them once you arrive home, meaning you can quickly find yourself running short of space. Purchasing coat hangers can be surprisingly expensive , depending on where you buy from. Certain shops sometimes ask if customers want to keep the hanger if an item of clothing is displayed on one, but in most cases they’re left behind, reports the Mirror . But one resourceful shopper asked a simple question in Primark and walked away with a bag-load at absolutely no extra cost. Writing on the popular Facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargaining, the shopper said: “Just a tip for anyone desperately in need of coat hangers. Go to Primark and ask for some!” They added: “I went today and they asked if my mum wanted to keep the hangers and I said I will as I’m in need of some. [The staff] gave me a bag full and told me if I need any more to go in and ask, as they get charged to dispose of them!” The Mirror previously reported that loads of people were thrilled to discover this, with one group member responding: “Better than going into landfill!” Another commented: “I’m so glad I’ve just seen this. I literally just been on Amazon looking at coat hangers!” A third pointed out: “This is a great idea. I don’t understand this need for perfectly aesthetic clothes hangers that match – they’re just there to do a job and hardly anyone is going to see them anyway!!” Another replied: “If there’s nothing wrong with them then this is a great thing from Primark. Customer gets hangers for free and they don’t have to deal with the waste” A person claiming to be an employee at the budget clothing store confirmed: “I work there! Just ask, we will definitely give you them.” Another retail worker told customers they need to “just ask” if they want a specific type of hanger. They added: “Don’t forget that they also have trousers hangers and the ‘one peg’ ones from the men shorts. [Nine times out of ten] they are buried but it’s worth the ask.” Some noted that this hack isn’t exclusive to Primark, with another retail worker claiming: “We will give hangers in Poundland too!” However, it appears not all clothing shops are as accommodating. In response to the post, one woman talked about her experience at Next, claiming: “I purchased from Next and asked to keep the hanger, they charged me 15p!” The Mirror reported in July 2024 that the high street fashion retailer had started charging a 15p fee for hangers in a trial at four of its UK stores in a bid to cut down on plastic use. At the time, a spokesperson for Next told The Mirror: “We are trying to reduce the amount of plastic being used to help protect the environment. Therefore, we retain the hangers and reuse them across the business. The small charge goes towards the production of more hangers.”
