Accra Mayor Champions Ga Language in Schools with “Oobaakɛ” Initiative
In a heartfelt push to preserve and promote the Ga language, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has directed that the Ga word for “Welcome” — “Oobaakɛ” — be boldly inscribed at the entrances of all basic schools across the metropolis.
The initiative, he explained, is more than just a greeting. It’s a cultural symbol and an educational tool meant to instill pride, identity, and belonging among young learners. “When children see and hear their own language being used meaningfully in schools, it builds their confidence and appreciation for who they are,” the Mayor said.
Mayor Allotey made the announcement during a working visit on Thursday to several schools, including Martyrs of Uganda R/C Basic School in Mamprobi, Ministry of Health (MOH) Basic School, 28th February Road Primary & Kindergarten, and Peter Odartey Lamptey Memorial JHS. The visits formed part of his Back-to-School outreach, where he distributed stationery and welcomed new entrants to the new academic year.
While interacting with a Ga language teacher at Martyrs of Uganda R/C Basic School, the Mayor encouraged her to do everything possible to pass on the language effectively. “As Mayor, I will ensure that Ga is taught in all schools within the metropolis. It is our heritage, and we must protect and preserve it for future generations,” he emphasized.
Beyond speeches, Mayor Allotey rolled up his sleeves and engaged directly with pupils — teaching them how to greet and welcome others in Ga. His enthusiasm was infectious, and the students eagerly followed along, repeating phrases and smiling proudly.
He also assured teachers and staff that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would continue to work hand-in-hand with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other stakeholders to ensure Ga language is properly integrated into school curricula.
“Preserving our local languages is not just about words — it’s about safeguarding who we are. The AMA is committed to building a culturally rich and inclusive city where every child grows up knowing their roots,” he stated.
The Mayor reaffirmed his commitment to launching more cultural awareness programmes that celebrate the identity of the Ga people, while complementing academic excellence with a deep sense of belonging and pride.
