A savvy shopper has found a way to bulk out an essential part of every wardrobe without breaking the bank. Most clothes that you buy rarely include a way to hang them properly once you get home, meaning you can quickly end up with a shortage. Buying clothes hangers can be surprisingly expensive , depending on where you shop. Certain stores often let shoppers keep the hanger if a piece of clothing is being displayed on it, but often they’re left behind. However, one savvy shopper has said they go a little further by asking a simple question at their local Primark shop, which helps them out at home. Posting to the popular Facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargaining, the shopper said: “Just a tip for anyone desperately in need of coat hangers. Go to Primark and ask for some!” The continued: “I went today and they asked if my mum wanted to keep the hangers and I said I will as I’m in need of some. [The staff] gave me a bag full and told me if I need any more to go in and ask, as they get charged to dispose of them!” The Mirror previously reported that plenty of people were delighted to learn this, with one group member replying: “Better than going into landfill!” Another said: “I’m so glad I’ve just seen this. I literally just been on Amazon looking at coat hangers!” A third pointed out: “This is a great idea. I don’t understand this need for perfectly aesthetic clothes hangers that match – they’re just there to do a job and hardly anyone is going to see them anyway!!” Someone else said: “If there’s nothing wrong with them then this is a great thing from Primark. Customer gets hangers for free and they don’t have to deal with the waste.” One person who claimed to be an employee at the discount clothing store said: “I work there! Just ask we will definitely give you them.” Another who also claims to be a retail worker reminded shoppers to “just ask” if they want a specific type of hanger. They said: “Don’t forget that they also have trousers hangers and the ‘one peg’ ones from the men shorts. [Nine times out of ten] they are buried but it’s worth the ask.” Some commented that this trick is not exclusive to Primark, with another retail worker sharing: “We will give hangers in Poundland too!” However, it seems that not every clothing shop will respond willingly. On the post, one woman shared her experience at Next, claiming: “I purchased from Next and asked to keep the hanger, they charged me 15p!” The Mirror reported back in July 2024 that the high street fashion retailer had begun charging a 15p fee for hangers in a trial at four of its UK stores in an effort to reduce plastic use. At the time, a spokesperson for Next told The Mirror : “We are trying to reduce the amount of plastic being used to help protect the environment. Therefore, we retain the hangers and reuse them across the business. The small charge goes towards the production of more hangers.”
