Government agents in Bhutan travel the Himalayas to measure happiness
Certificate: pg
In Bhutan, the tiny Buddhist kingdom on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, the authorities measure the population’s happiness and use it to guide policy and development in the country. This film follows Amber and his colleague Gunar, who are employed as agents of this unorthodox government department. It’s their job to collect data for the Gross National Happiness index by meeting citizens across Bhutan and asking them to score themselves, in areas including psychological wellbeing, health, education and living standards.
Amber himself doesn’t score too highly. He’s 40 and unmarried, living at home to care for his elderly mother, but he maintains his hope for the future as he strives to find his own personal happiness. This serene, beautiful film is as much Amber’s journey to contentment as it is a window into Bhutan’s feelgood approach to governance and nation-building. (90 minutes)
