The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation has pledged strong support for Plan International Ghana’s new Digital Skills Project, which aims to empower young people with cutting-edge technology training. Minister Samuel Nartey George (MP) endorsed the initiative, describing it as a timely effort that complements government programmes such as the 1 Million Coders Programme and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
During a courtesy visit by Plan International Ghana, the Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to gender balance and inclusivity in the digital sector. He emphasized that the project would ensure a 50:50 male-to-female participation ratio, with 10 percent of slots reserved for persons with disabilities. He also confirmed that state institutions, including the Kofi Annan ICT Centre of Excellence, will provide technical and institutional support.
Plan International Ghana’s Country Director, Mr. Constant Tchona, explained that the project, developed in partnership with Nokia, will focus on equipping youth with skills in coding, cybersecurity, and digital solution development. Training will encourage participants to apply technology in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and urban planning, addressing key national challenges.
According to Mr. Tchona, training will run in four-month cycles across multiple centres, including Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi. Half of the beneficiaries will be women, and deliberate efforts are being made to ensure inclusion of persons with disabilities. The first batch of trainees is expected to begin before the end of the month.
The programme will also utilize distance learning platforms to expand reach nationwide, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for all participants. Mr. Tchona noted that the goal is not just to create employment opportunities but to equip young people to become innovators and problem-solvers within their communities.
