All Creatures Great and Small star swaps Dales for murder in new Channel 5 thriller

TV star Matthew Lewis looks unrecognisable in a trailer for upcoming thriller Murder Before Evensong. The actor is best known as Hugh Hulton in All Creatures Great and Small or Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies. But he looks totally different in the trailer and first look images of him in 5’s six-episode drama, which is based on the first novel in the best-selling series, the Canon Clement Mysteries, by British author Reverend Richard Coles. Set in 1980s England, the drama sees Matthew play Canon Daniel Clement, the Rector of Champton. He shares Champton rectory with his widowed mother Audrey and his dogs Cosmo and Hilda. But their lives take a turn when a body is discovered at the church, with the Canon suddenly caught up in a mysterious case of murder. The synopsis says: “When Daniel announces a plan to modernise the church, the parish is suddenly divided. And then a body is found dead at the back of the church. “As the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together… and catch a killer.” The cast also includes New Tricks star Amanda Redman, who plays the clergyman’s mum, and Amit Shah, who starts as Neil Vanloo, a detective sergeant. Channel 5 also teased the new series on Instagram, sharing a clip and the comment: “A town of secrets, lies and murder!” Fans have expressed their excitement about the drama, with one pleading in the comments section: “I hope it’s on a Saturday night.” “Can’t wait to see it,” said someone else, as one viewer posted: “Really looking forward to seeing this.” Matthew, 36, is well known to TV viewers for All Creatures Great and Small, which he was in from 2020 2021. Other television credits include Girlfriends, Ripper Street and Bluestone 42. He has also had success on the big screen in the movies about JK Rowling’s boy wizard, starring as Neville in all of the films from The Philosopher’s Stone to The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Murder Before Evensong is expected to air on 5 this autumn.
