Google has issued a new warning and an emergency update for all PC users, with Chrome under attack. “An exploit for CVE-2025-10585 exists in the wild,” the company says, confirming a Type Confusion flaw in V8, Chrome’s underlying Java engine.
The threat was disclosed by Google’s Threat Analysis Group and patched just 48 hours later. That tells us it’s a highly targeted attack, but one that’s serious enough to rush out a fix. The risk for the wider user base is that once a vulnerability has been disclosed, even if details are withheld at this early stage others will move to exploit it.

The chances are that CVE-2025-10585 is being used in chain attacks, where it provides initial access for a bad actor to run other exploits on a PC. And those exploits could target all the data and credentials stored locally, as seen with Raven Stealer this week.
With emergency updates such as Chrome Version 140.0.7339.185/.186, you can expect the update to automatically download to your browser quickly — you should have it now. You must then restart Chrome to install the new software.

Meanwhile, Chrome is on a tear. Despite Microsoft’s intensifying campaign to push Chrome users to the Edge, the opposite is happening. The mid-September illustrative data from StatCounter suggests Chrome is still growing as Edge shrinks.
There were headlines last month when Chrome passed the 70% market share milestone, since then Chrome has grown further to top 72%, while Edge’s much smaller share has dropped from 13% in June to just over 11% now.
