Brett James, a Grammy Award-winning songwriter and member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, has died at the age of 57 in a tragic plane crash in Franklin, North Carolina. Known for writing Carrie Underwood’s Jesus, Take the Wheel among 27 No. 1 hits, James left an indelible mark on the country music industry with a career spanning over 500 recorded songs.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA ) via WZTV Nashville, James was among three individuals on board a Cirrus SR22T that went down near Franklin, North Carolina, on the afternoon of Thursday, September 18. The aircraft, registered in James’ name, had taken off from Nashville earlier that day.
The Macon County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that students and staff at the elementary school were unharmed, noting the plane went down on neighbouring property.
Throughout his career, James penned some of the most memorable tracks in contemporary country and pop music. His songwriting credits include Jesus, Take the Wheel – Carrie Underwood, Blessed – Martina McBride, When the Sun Goes Down – Kenny Chesney & Uncle Kracker, Mr. Know It All – Kelly Clarkson, The Truth – Jason Aldean and Cowboy Casanova – Carrie Underwood.
His works even earned him a Grammy Award.
Fans, colleagues, and fellow musicians have expressed shock and grief over James’ passing. Country singer Justin Adams wrote, “The loss of a legend. Brett was always the kindest soul and was a champion for me early on in my career. You never forget people like that. So sad for his family. Praying for them.”
A page dedicated to country music shared, “Country music lost a legend. we are saddened to share that songwriter Brett James tragically passed away at 57 in a plane crash today. Other fans and followers echoed the sentiments online, “Heartbreaking. sending so much love to everyone who knew and loved him.”
James, a two-time ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year, received numerous BMI and ASCAP awards throughout his career. In addition to his songwriting, he was a producer, co-founded the publishing company Cornman Music, and served on the boards of both the Country Music Association and the Recording Academy.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash, with support from the FAA and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
