The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) marked a historic milestone on Saturday evening, celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a grand Gala event that honoured six legends of the sport through induction into the newly established Squash Hall of Fame.
The ceremony, held as part of a three-day weekend of activities, united generations of squash players, many of whom returned from abroad to pay tribute to the community that helped shape their formative years.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Guyana Squash Archival Project (GSAP), a new committee tasked with chronicling and preserving the rich history of Guyanese squash from its inception to the present day.
The inaugural Hall of Fame Class of 2025 comprises six towering figures whose contributions have defined the sport locally and regionally; Ron Hughes, Mike Watkinson, Madhu Wellingkar, Josephine Whitehead, Carl Ince, and Nicolette Fernandes.
Their portraits now adorn the National Racquet Centre, a lasting symbol of their dedication and inspiration for the next generation of athletes.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Dennis Dias, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for over 50 years of service and unwavering commitment to the development of squash in Guyana.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson jR, praised the establishment of the Hall of Fame, describing it as a catalyst for unlocking dreams and motivating talent development across disciplines.
Guyana’s squash legacy extends well beyond its borders. The country has long been a powerhouse in Caribbean squash, producing players who have dominated regional championships and represented the nation with distinction.
Among them is Nicolette Fernandes, widely regarded as one of the finest players in the Americas during her international career.
Fernandes not only blazed a trail for women in the sport but also placed Guyana firmly on the global squash map with her achievements.
The Hall of Fame serves not only as recognition of past achievements but also as an investment in the future.
By permanently enshrining the legends who built the foundation of the sport, the GSA is ensuring that their contributions continue to inspire young players to carry forward Guyana’s proud tradition in squash.
