KUCHING, Sept 19: The Public Works Department (JKR) Disaster Operations Room (BiGBen) has raised its preparedness for the approaching Northeast Monsoon period, says Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

In a Facebook post, he visited JKR’s BiGBen to ensure all teams are on the highest level of readiness.

“Whenever disaster strikes, I am reminded that there are people worried about their families’ safety and losing access to their hometowns. The current situation in Sabah reminds us of the importance of preparedness.

“This (BiGBen) is where information is channelled, actions coordinated, and quick decisions made so that aid reaches the people on time,” he said.

Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said that under the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), JKR is tasked with coordinating logistics, assets, and providing technical expertise in the field of engineering.

In addition to mobilising technical teams, the department also did the following:

Prepared 2,570 feet of Bailey bridged, stored at seven strategic depots nationwide, ready to be deployed immediately when routes are cut off.
Conduct continuous monitoring of 1,066 high-risk slopes in Peninsular Malaysia, seven in Sabah, one in Sarawak, and 13 in Labuan.
Activate disaster alert systems and emergency patrols to ensure that critical roads remain safe for use.
Work closely with NADMA, the police, armed forces, and local authorities to coordinate field operations.

“Funding for repair works is also being reviewed, and the Ministry of Works has already discussed implementing urgent and immediate repair measures.

“I would like to advise the public always to prioritise the safety of themselves and their families and stay updated with the latest information by visiting JKR’s Disaster Management website,” he said.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), the Northeast Monsoon is expected to start from November to March, which brings heavy rain especially to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, west of Sarawak, and east of Sabah.

In preparation for the Northeast Monsoon, the department advises the public to stay updated on weather conditions, ensure they have sufficient water and non-perishable food supplies, and clear drains and rain gutters of blockages.

During the monsoon period, METMalaysia also urged the public to stay away from fast flowing drains, rivers, and flooded areas, avoid crossing unstable bridges and roads that are prone to floods, be prepared to move it directed, make sure vehicles are parked in a high place and all the other property is protected from loss and destruction due to floods, and avoid going to sea. — DayakDaily
