Bengaluru: After 30 years of high demand, the Railway Ministry has approved a new superfast train service between Bengaluru and Mumbai, announced BJP leader Tejasvi Surya on Saturday, September 27. The train aims to provide faster, affordable, and convenient travel between two of India’s major economic hubs.
Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Very soon, we will be starting a superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai. Both cities are major economic hubs, and capacity expansion at their stations has now made this possible.”
Decades-long demand for a new service
Currently, Bengaluru and Mumbai are connected by only one train, the Udyan Express, which takes approximately 24 hours to complete the journey. Surya highlighted that despite the rapid growth of both cities over three decades, no additional superfast train had been introduced until now.
He noted, “This was a demand pending for 30 years. In the last three decades, despite the growth of both cities, we have had only one superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai.”
Last year alone, over 26 lakh passengers travelled by air between the two cities, reflecting high commuter demand. The new superfast train will provide a more affordable alternative to flights and buses, easing travel for business travellers, families, and students.
Benefits for commuters
The new train service is expected to:
Reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Mumbai.
Surya expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for making the long-pending project a reality. Vaishnaw praised Surya’s efforts, saying, “I am very happy that Tejasvi ji has been persistently following up for a superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai. Thank you, Tejasvi ji, for pursuing it so well. You have always been fighting for the people of Bengaluru.”
The approval of the new superfast train marks a significant milestone in improving intercity rail connectivity in India. With travel between Bengaluru and Mumbai set to become faster, cheaper, and more convenient, lakhs of people will now have a reliable alternative to flights and road travel, boosting both economic and social connectivity between the two cities.
